House rules guests actually read: what works for you?

House rules work best when guests see them before booking and again before arrival. Rules usually fall into three groups: - Safety: smoking, candles, balcony or hot tub use, maximum occupancy. - Neighbours: quiet hours, parking, bins and recycling days. - Property care: check-out tasks, heating, pets.

Keeping the list short, explaining the reason ("bins go out Tuesday night or they are not collected"), and putting the most important points on a card in the property all tend to help.

Remember that rules must be applied consistently and not in a way that discriminates against guests with protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010.
